Wampach’s Restaurant (Shakopee, MN) – This small diner started out as “Andy’s Uptown Cafe” and there’s a black & white photo hanging on the wall to prove it. My waitress said that Andy Wampach first opened for business “over 60 years ago” but didn’t know the exact year – so let’s just say circa 1950. This is the kind of place where the waitress knows all the customers by name but treats strangers to the same friendly service as the regulars. An elderly woman named Mary Lou who was sitting in the next booth over told me that her father was the one who renovated and expanded the restaurant several decades ago when it made the switch from Andy’s to Wampach’s. The date on that renovation is fuzzy, but it seems to be when this particular sign was first installed. This place is the quintessential small town American diner: friendly service, homemade food, great signage, a rich history… and almost everything on the menu comes with a side of Jell-O.
