Orchard Supply Hardware (San Jose, CA) – This chain of hardware stores was originally established by prune farmers during the Great Depression. Two consecutive years of drought and crop failures led these farmers to band together in order to buy their farm supplies as a cooperative. Each farmer chipped in $30 and Orchard Supply was born. Pretty cool history. I wasn’t able to track down the exact age of this sign, but this particular location first opened back in 1946. The sign itself likely wasn’t installed until the 1950s when the coop made the transition into a retail “hardware” business.
