Mobil Pegasus (Medina, MN) – You simply can’t miss this sign as you travel Highway 55 through the western Minneapolis suburbs. When I first saw it I was instantly consumed with finding out its story. Luckily, he clerk inside the store put me in touch with Randy Mayer, the long time-owner of the gas station who had just recently sold the business. When I reached out to Randy, he was kind enough to share with me a few details of the sign’s history. It turns out that his father purchased this sign in 1982 from a shuttered Exxon store in the small town of Broadus, MT. It was installed in this location that same year and has been there ever since. His best guess is that it was from the late 1930s. Combine that with the fact that this huge (~15 feet across) well-kept sign is double-sided porcelain & neon makes it extremely rare and valuable. In fact, rumor has it that there is only one other like it still in existence. Also adding to the value is that fact that is was manufactured by Texlite, the company that made the original Pegasus sign first placed atop Dallas’ Magnolia building in 1934.
