Mel’s Bowl (Redwood City, CA) – Mel’s first opened its doors in 1960 and despite it being called Redwood Lanes Bowling Center by the time it closed in 2011, this iconic sign has remained intact. As I write this, there is a fierce battle going on between developers proposing to build an apartment complex on this site and Redwood City’s Historic Resources Advisory Committee. The committee’s hope is not to stop the construction of the building, but to preserve this historic Googie sign by somehow incorporating it into the architectural design. I sure hope they’re successful; it would be a shame for this piece of history to be lost forever.
