King’s Hi-Way Motel (Santa Clara, CA) – I first approached this sign from the opposite side and started snapping shots immediately. When I worked my way around to this side I was blown away – it was in much “worse” shape but that was exactly what made it so spectacular. The once brilliant red paint now appeared as if it were dripping off the sign. The brush strokes from the last time it was painted (several decades ago, no doubt) were clearly visible and the light bulbs running along the base were few and far between exposing mostly empty sockets. I was amazed that the neon tubes appeared to still be in such good shape. This is a classic example of when a sign renovation would be ill-advised because so much character would be lost forever.
