Balyeat’s Coffee Shop (Van Wert, OH) – Walking into this old time 1920s coffee shop is like taking a step back in time, but not in a doo-wop kind of way. It had much more of a lounge feel inside: a lot of dark wood and dim lighting (no windows) with a long breakfast counter running the length of the sizable dining room area. We only had coffee while we were there, but this place is known by the locals for serving old-fashioned home-cooked meals and desserts at a reasonable price. We sat at the counter and chatted with a waitress who didn’t know anything about the history of this sign, but was friendly nonetheless. I’m really glad we stopped in because we got a genuine taste of Americana, something that is getting harder and harder to come by.
