Anel French Cleaners (New York, NY) – I was legitimately surprised to find out that the first word in the name of this Upper West Side dry cleaners was “Anel”. I thought for sure that there were some letters missing in front, especially since the whole word is lowercase – and it just looks like letters are missing from the track on the front facade. But sure enough, there is even an old painted sign in the window (you can barely make it out in the lower left corner of this shot) that reads French Cleaning by ‘Anel’. Yes, the word Anel is in single quotes. So maybe it used to be called something else (Chanel?) and they had to change based on a lawsuit. Then somebody had to assume the nickname Anel so that it all made sense? Google Maps does list them as Chanel, but I think that is based on user generated content, especially since that name appears nowhere else. The truth is out there, I just haven’t found it yet.
